Located in the Strait of Bonifacio, the island of Caprera is a major tourist destination as well as being the place where Giuseppe Garibaldi retired to in 1854 and died in 1882.
The island has been declared a natural reserve for its particular marine bird species (royal seagull, peregrine falcon and cormorant). The island's name is linked to that of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian patriot and fighter who lived in the 19th century and one of the fathers of the Italian independence.
His house is now a museum and the whole island of Caprera is a national monument. On the southwest side of the island there is a very important sailing center, with many coves and anchorages along the coast that make landings very easy.
A century after the death of Garibaldi, the island was freed from many military restrictions and it is now fully open to visitors.
