La Maddalena is the name of the main island of the archipelago located in the north-eastern tip of Sardinia, made up of more than sixty islands, islets and rocks. In the past, those islands were important naval and military bases; today it is a very impressive and sought after tourist destination due to its beautiful pristine beaches and its clear blue sea.
The Maddalena archipelago lies off the north-eastern coast of Sardinia, near Costa Smeralda. The group of rocky islands is located in a unique sea environment with clear, sparkling waters, characterized by a range of blues and turquoise colors.
Most of the beaches are composed of fine sand and set in an unforgettable landscape, in a suggestive environment where granite rocks are accompanied by turquoise sea. Sea currents and geology have formed these particular beaches with a unique color of sand.
The main island, La Maddalena, with the capital city of the same name, offers a wide choice of hotels, restaurants and tourist services. Apart from La Maddalena and Caprera, most of the islands are uninhabited and pristine, protected by the national park authorities.
The archipelago is an important destination in North Sardinia and Costa Smeralda, and most of the tourist services and accommodation operate from May to October.

One of the most important tourist site of the archipelago is the House of Garibaldi, on the island of Caprera, where Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero of the Italian Risorgimento, lived and died. Garibaldi's house is open to the public and can be visited daily.
